# Production in Bimp: two ways, with and without a production task

> Production in Bimp runs on a specification (product composition, stages, operations) and has two methods. The simple one: a production order, then an assembly that writes off materials and posts the finished product. The staged one: a production order, then a production task for each product unit, while assembly and piecework pay are created automatically as stage statuses change.

## What production in Bimp consists of

Production in Bimp is built around a **specification**, the product's process card, and several documents; each has its own tab in the **Production** section. All articles in this section are listed on the “[Production](https://bimpsoft.com/en/help/production/)” page.

| Document | Purpose |
|---|---|
| [Specification](https://bimpsoft.com/en/help/production/specifications/) | Product composition, stages, operations, norms and planned cost price |
| [Production order](https://bimpsoft.com/en/help/production/production-order/) | The plan: what to make, from which materials, with which operations |
| [Production task](https://bimpsoft.com/en/help/production/production-tasks/) | Staged execution of one product (one series) |
| [Assembly](https://bimpsoft.com/en/help/production/assembly/) | The actual output: materials written off, product posted, cost price |
| [Disassembly](https://bimpsoft.com/en/help/production/disassembly/) | The reverse operation: breaking a product or raw material into components |

The **Production** menu also has a "Cost allocation" tab (see [Cost allocation](https://bimpsoft.com/en/help/costing/cost-allocation/)) and a journal of customer orders. All documents record costs in the cost price of the finished product.

## Two production methods

Choose the method by how closely you need to follow the process.

**Method 1: without a production task.** Use it when recording the result is enough.

1. Create a production order (manually or from a customer order).
2. If needed, transfer materials to the workshop with a Stock transfer document.
3. Create an assembly based on the order and post it: materials are written off, the product is posted, and piecework pay and orders to contractors are created automatically.

**Method 2: with a production task.** Use it for multi-stage production where a different employee performs each stage.

1. Set stages and operations in the specification.
2. In the production order, click "Create batches" and create a production task based on it: the system creates a separate task for each unit of product with its series.
3. Move the task stages between statuses. The system creates piecework pay, assembly of semi-finished products and assembly of the finished product by itself.

The "Assembly" document only records the result, while a production task shows the whole path between "started" and "done": where the product is now, who is working on it, where it is idle.

## Work in progress and cost price

A product's cost price is made up of the value of written-off materials and performed operations. A product that has passed some stages but is not yet posted as finished is accounted for as work in progress (WIP): value accumulates by stage without a separate action. See [Accumulated cost](https://bimpsoft.com/en/help/costing/cost-accumulation/) and the [Accumulated cost report](https://bimpsoft.com/en/help/reports/accumulated-cost-report/).

## Customer-supplied materials and processing

Bimp accounts for customer-supplied materials (the customer's own materials) by quantity only, with a zero price and cost price. Starting with release 122:

- In the supplier order and the Goods receipt, the "Processing" checkbox lifts the ban on a zero price; for posted goods, batches with a cost price of 0.00 UAH are created automatically.
- A "Return to supplier" based on such a receipt inherits the checkbox and writes off the materials at zero cost price.
- In the production order and assembly, for the "Own processing" production type you can reserve and write off materials from zero-cost batches; the cost price of the finished product accounts for this correctly.
- The "Third-party processing" type is informational: it does not affect accounting.
- Such operations do not change the balance with the counterparty: in settlement reports the amounts are zero or empty.

Starting with release 123, when "Processing" is on, zero prices are also allowed in the Customer order and Sales of goods and services.

- Reports: [Production status](https://bimpsoft.com/en/help/reports/production-status-report/) and [Cost of produced goods](https://bimpsoft.com/en/help/reports/production-cost-report/).
- Batch numbering: in the company's accounting settings, the "Set the same batch number (Production)" switch creates a single batch number for all series of a document, and the number mask is configured with a template.

## FAQ

**Which production method should I choose: assembly or a production task?**

If it is enough to record that output happened (materials written off, product in stock), use a production order and assembly. If you need to see which stage each product is at, who works on it and where it is idle, use a production task.

**Can I produce without a specification?**

Yes. In the production order, turn on the "Without specification" switch on the "Products" tab and add the product and materials manually.

**How do I account for customer-supplied materials?**

Turn on the "Processing" checkbox in the supplier order and the goods receipt: a zero price is then allowed and batches are created with a cost price of 0.00. In production you can reserve and write off such materials, and their value does not affect settlements with the counterparty.
